HVAC/R Technician

HVAC/R, or Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration, refers to the process of climate control in both residential and commercial buildings; as well as, refrigeration requiring the control of humidity and temperature. HVAC/R Technician training school at NTI in Maine (ME) provides technicians with the theory and knowledge required for installation, maintenance and repair of residential and light commercial systems.

Upon completion of the program, students may decide to specialize in certain areas of HVAC/R. For example, they may wish to concentrate in the heating or refrigeration systems or they may wish to specialize in installation only. Some may wish to generalize in all aspects of HVAC/R. The HVAC/R program at NTI is meant to give the student training in all areas of Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning repair maintenance and installation.

Program Objectives

- Prepare graduates to pass the NATE Certification Exam.
- Practice the highest standards of safety.
- Have an introduction to construction math.
- Be familiar with the reading of blueprints.
- Develop skills with mechanical and electrical applications.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to electrical, gas, and oil furnaces.
- Develop an understanding for different refrigerant types to their application requirements.
- Develop an understanding with the different types of air conditioning systems.
- Be eligible for an apprenticeship program.

A growing focus on improving indoor air quality and the increasing use of refrigerated equipment by a growing number of stores and gasoline stations that sell food should also create more jobs for heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration technicians.*

Certification

Northeast Technical Institute is an Authorized Testing Center for the North American Technician Excellence Certification Exam.

Upon completion of the program, students may decide to sit for the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) Certification Exam. NATE is the leading certification program for technicians in the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) industry and is the only test supported by the entire industry. Contractors support the certified graduates because certified technicians remain in the industry longer, do the job right the first time, and are believed to be more productive than non-certified ones.

Students may also test for Gas Certification through CETP (The Certified Employee Training Program). CETP is a formal structure for training, testing and documentation to assure that workers in the propane industry have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their work safely and effectively.
